DR. BRYCE COWAN BSC MSC MD PHD FRCSC FACMS
Dr. Cowan is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Although is his surgical experience operating in all areas of the body is diverse, his current practice is devoted to plastic reconstructive and cosmetic surgery for the head and neck, and producing the most ideal results possible for facial reconstruction and face and neck enhancements.
In addition to his formal training in Plastic Surgery, he is American College of Mohs Surgery (FACMS) fellowship trained in Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer removal, and was the very first plastic surgeon certified to perform Mohs surgery in Canada. Dr. Cowan remains one of only two plastic surgeons performing Mohs surgery in the country, and one of less than ten plastic surgeons worldwide trained to perform Mohs micrographic removal of cancers and subsequent facial reconstruction.
Dr. Cowan is a graduate of the University of Toronto's prestigious MD/PhD program. He received his PhD in Pathology from the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children, studying the role of the immune system in wound healing and disease. He previously obtained an MSc (Master of Science) degree from the University of Toronto with part of this training performed at Princeton University, where he studied regenerative tissue healing; a perfect complement to his focus in facial surgery.
Following his medical training, Dr. Cowan completed residency training in plastic surgery at the University of Calgary. In 2004, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certified him as a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery (FRCSC). He completed fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery at the University of British Columbia in early 2005, receiving his FACMS.
Dr. Cowan is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia's Department of Dermatology and Skin Science and remains the only Canadian academic Plastic Surgeon certified to perform Mohs surgery. He is the only full-time member and majority owner of the UBC Skin Care Centre surgical teaching faculty, Canada's first ACMS fellowship training program. He has currently trained 14 national and international surgical ACMS Mohs fellows during his UBC tenure, and annually trains plastic surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, and dermatology residents in cancer removal, reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. He has received numerous recognitions for his leadership in his field and is active member of the American College of Mohs Surgery and both the American and the Canadian Societies of Plastic Surgery.
